The original GLASS IN FLIGHT is a traveling exhibition including 21 powder-coated steel sculptures including butterflies, bees, dragonflies, beetles, and a bird! Designed specifically for outdoor display, the works are crafted from hand-cut and hand-faceted Dalle de Verre glass set into powder-coated steel frames. The Dalle de Verre glass is thick and durable and glows in sunlight with a beautiful intensity. Each sculpture was painstakingly conceived, designed, cut, assembled and welded together by the artist ALEX HEVERI herself. Light filtering through the glass amplifies the saturated colors and iridescence of the insect wings, intensifying the illusion of movement and flight.

GLASS IN FLIGHT

“Steel appeals to me because it appears hard, unyielding, and permanent, yet with artistic skill and effort, it can be molded like clay. Light, like fire, mesmerizes the human soul. It is this interplay between the two – the strength and power of steel with illuminated glow of color and glass that informs my art.”

— ALEX HEVERI

GLASS IN FLIGHT 2 includes 24 powder-coated steel sculptures including butterflies, dragonflies, bees, ants, birds, and praying mantis! The importance of pollinators inspired Alex to work tirelessly in her free time over a period of four years to bring both sets of sculptures to life. With over twenty five years experience creating enormous steel and glass sculptures, primarily abstract in design, Alex evolved her style to create these works in a hyper-realistic style and larger than life in order to promote the large impact these small creatures have in the natural world.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Tucson-based ALEX HEVERI has been an artist her entire life. Working her way through various media, she discovered sculpture as an undergraduate student at Arizona State University. During that time Alex experienced an installation of neon art and was mesmerized by the glowing and vibrantly colored light. Immediately following that encounter, Alex signed up for her first sculpture class where she began to learn welding and fell in love with the steel medium. After taking a break from art to focus on law school and establishing a successful career as a defense attorney, Alex participated in a Dalle de Verre workshop hosted by a local glass studio. She describes the moment she cut into her first piece of the thick Dalle de Verre slab of glass as electrifying. She now considers herself a light artist and uses steel and Dalle de Verre glass to create intensely powerful experiences of light and color. Alex applies an intensity of focus and a lot of discipline to her practices as both artist and attorney and her passion and love of her work is evident in the sculptures that make up the GLASS IN FLIGHT exhibitions.
